The families of two women killed in a car crash in southwest Michigan accepted $6.9 million to settle a consolidated lawsuit in the Circuit Court of Cook County.

On Oct. 12, 2020, Helen Hackel, 86, and Robin Hackel, 59, were traveling eastbound on Baseline Road near its intersection with County Road 681 in Geneva Township, Van Buren County, Michigan, according to the complaint.

The pair, a mother and daughter-in-law, were stopped at a stop sign on the rural road when they were rear-ended by a car allegedly traveling about 140 mph. The impact forced their car through the intersection without stopping, causing it to flip over, the complaint stated.

The driver of the other car was Yonah Kohn, who was a director at Brooktree Arlington IL, LLC, a substance abuse treatment center in Arlington Heights. He was operating a company vehicle and was traveling in Michigan for business purposes related to Brooktree.
