$1.2 million settlement for sexual abuse case at a boarding school
Romanucci & Blandin, LLC announces the settlement of a sexual abuse case at a private U.S. boarding school, where a 17-year-old male student was groomed and abused by a female teacher who was more than 30 years his senior. The case was settled for $1.2 million, one of the largest settlements involving a male victim and a female perpetrator. When the student tried to end the abuse, the teacher abused the power of her authority and docked the student’s grades. The student graduated in 2016 and has needed years of psychiatric treatment and therapy.
The settlement is subject to confidentiality limits on disclosing names of the parties involved.
“Families send their children to boarding school presuming a culture of safety and nurturing. To have a high school student be victimized in this way by a teacher is counter to every expectation this student had while attending a place thought by many to have been a valuable educational opportunity,” said Attorney Jason Friedl, Romanucci & Blandin, LLC.
“There is an unfortunate double standard for sexual abuse cases involving male victims and female perpetrators, and we are pleased to have secured meaningful justice for our male client, who was exploited and coerced in the worst ways by someone who should have been his mentor. Anyone who has suffered sexual abuse has a long road of healing and this situation is certainly no different,” said Attorney Martin Gould, Romanucci & Blandin, LLC.
