$38,750,000 Settlement – Chicago Red Light Cameras Class Action

An unprecedented $38.75 million settlement in a class action lawsuit against the City of Chicago was reached over violations of its rules and motorists’ due process rights in issuing and collecting on red-light and speed-camera violation notices.

The settlement allows affected motorists to recover up to half of their original penalties. It requires the City to change its practices to comply with its own municipal code going forward. Additionally, the City will deem the 1.5 million tickets at issue in the suit void. It will be restricted from further initiating collection actions, vehicle seizures, or other enforcement of the improper violation notices.
