The Unthinkable is Happening
The actions playing out on the streets in and around Chicago are right out of the horrific pages of human history. The “disappearing” of people detained by secretive, masked agents with no rights being read, no reason given for detention, no phone call and no ability to contact an attorney. Teargassing of protestors. Use of force that causes bodily injury and harm. Dragging parents out of cars with their children nearby. Journalists are being arrested. Wrongful detentions. Civil rights and human rights violations against Hispanic and Latino men, women, children and countless American citizens. This autocratic playbook is a disturbing parallel to devastating wartime tactics by dictators across world history.
Further, federal agents are now patrolling the streets wearing masks and profiling people based on race and appearance, in direct violation of the Ku Klux Klan Act, designed to make exactly such actions illegal. This is no different than a deeply painful and shameful chapter in American history.
They are arresting Dreamers, landscapers, dishwashers, cooks, hospitality, hospital and factory workers, and their children. They are detaining American citizens indiscriminately. They are crashing vehicles to apprehend. Rappelling from helicopters. Zip tying sleeping children. Somewhere in Chicago, a child is hiding in an attic as masked men are storming into homes without warrants.
Chicago is known as the City of Big Shoulders. We embrace every one of our immigrant communities. Chicago was built by immigrants from the four corners of the globe, and we are all better for it.

- If Latinos were a separate economy, they’d rank among the top five in the world — an economic force to be reckoned with.
- Latina women alone contributed $1.3 trillion in GDP in 2021, reflecting the growing economic influence of Hispanic women.
This economic strength underscores why the Hispanic community deserves not only respect but protection from civil rights abuses, profiling and constitutional infringements.
Chicago’s Hispanic Community Is Under Attack
We are taking action to protect the Hispanic community and our country from Constitutional violations.
The Constitution of the United States, along with the Illinois Constitution, guarantees rights to protect civilians against abuses of power, especially unlawful detention and detainment.
We must stop Constitutional violations of due process and stop violations of Constitutional amendments, including, but not limited to:
- First Amendment (Freedom of Speech and Assembly)
- Fourth Amendment (Protection Against Unreasonable Search and Seizure)
- Fourteenth Amendment (Equal Protection and Due Process)
