Death of jailed former UH football player sparks federal lawsuit against Harris County, sheriff

A former University of Houston football player with mental illness was not given proper medical care in Harris County Jail, leading to his death from a sepsis infection, a new federal lawsuit alleges.

Kristopher McGregor, 39, died Jan. 30, 2025, after contracting sepsis from an untreated strep throat infection caused by his inability to take proper care of himself or advocate for his medical needs due to schizophrenia, the lawsuit states.
