Romanucci & Blandin files petition for all video and other evidence regarding fatal police shooting of teenager Saveion McConnell near Kansas City

July 20, 2026

Unarmed 19-year-old was struck with police car, shot and killed

CHICAGO (July 20, 2026) – Nationally renowned civil rights law firm Romanucci & Blandin, LLC has filed a petition on behalf of Saveion McConnell’s parents seeking a variety of evidence about the death of their son, an unarmed 19-year-old Black resident of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, who was shot multiple times and killed by a Lafayette County Sheriff’s deputy. The petition was filed on July 17, 2026, in the 17th Judicial Circuit Court, in Johnson County, Missouri.

In the petition, Saveion’s parents seek possession of all videos of the incident, including body-worn and in-car camera footage, as well as all incident and investigative reports and related records. The evidence sought is from the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Odessa Police Department. As stated in the petition, Saveion’s parents “have a direct, urgent, and compelling interest in obtaining all records available under [the law] to investigate the circumstances of their son’s death, to evaluate potential civil claims, and to preserve evidence before it is lost or degraded.” The evidence request is not intended for public distribution at this time.

In the early morning of May 1, 2026, Saveion was walking with another young man near U.S. Highway 50 in unincorporated Pittsville when the Sheriff’s deputy struck Saveion with his patrol car and then shot him multiple times. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is now investigating and has confirmed that no gun or other weapon was recovered at the scene. Saveion was a football and basketball player who graduated from Lee’s Summit North High School in 2025.

The firm’s investigation is examining the events leading up to Saveion’s tragic death. Romanucci & Blandin continues to demand full transparency from all law enforcement agencies involved.

The legal team representing Saveion’s parents includes Senior Attorney Joshua M. Levin, Senior Attorney Benjamin A. Berkman, and Attorney Colton M. Johnson Taylor of the Romanucci & Blandin law firm, along with co-counsel at the Dunk Law Firm.

“There is no reason Saveion should have been killed that night. He was unarmed and posed no threat to any officer. There does not appear to be any justification for the officer’s use of deadly force against Saveion. Our petition for the video evidence and police reports from this incident is an essential step in gathering all facts about what happened that night. We will work tirelessly toward holding accountable all those responsible for taking this young man’s life,” said Senior Attorney Joshua M. Levin, Romanucci & Blandin.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact Romanucci & Blandin for a confidential conversation at 312-458-1000 or intakes@rblaw.net.
