$5,500,000 Settlement - Medical Negligence

Partners Joseph E. Kolar and Sarah M. Raisch settled a medical negligence case for $5.5 million involving a patient whom emergency medicine physicians suspected had aortic dissection.

However, the doctors did not order a CT scan of the chest, a common test to confirm aortic dissection. The patient was admitted to the hospital, and the CT scan was performed approximately nine hours after arrival in the ER. It confirmed an aortic dissection, which is a life-threatening condition that can be treated with prompt surgery. Due to the significant delay, the patient died on the operating room table when their aorta ruptured.

R&B research shows this is the highest settlement in Illinois to date for a medical negligence case involving aortic dissection. The patient was survived by a spouse and two adult children.
