$6,000,000 Settlement - Medical Malpractice Delayed Heart Surgery Wrongful Death
Partner Joseph E. Kolar obtained a $6 million settlement for a patient who died at a Chicago-area hospital. The patient died less than a week after heart surgery. The patient’s family alleged that the heart surgery was unnecessarily delayed for more than three months. The three-month delay, according to Kolar, led to the patient declining from a stable condition to cardiogenic shock before the surgery.
“The heart surgery was successful, but the delay led to ischemic injury to other organs before the surgery,” Kolar said. The patient could not survive the injuries to the other organs, he also said.
The settlement will provide for the future of the patient’s spouse and young child. The parties reached the settlement through mediation with the Honorable Kay Hanlon. Joe was assisted with the case by Senior Attorney Patrick A. Huber. Senior Paralegal Team Lead Lucy Gonzalez and Law Clerk Rebecca Westrom also provided valuable assistance.
